Anne Shirley is one of the most imaginative girls on earth. She uses her vivid imagination to cope with being an orphan who is tossed about from one sad situation to another, and to imagine away her freckles and especially her red hair, which she hates. Her red hair leads her to give Gilbert Blythe, a classmate in her new home of Avonlea, the could shoulder for a very long time because he called her "Carrots" on her first day of school.

Anne is very smart, and does well in school and goes off to college. She also makes her way into many hearts and develops close friends with her endearing ways. She loves literature and poetry, and makes people's lives better through her caring nature. It is because of her caring and imaginative personality that Gilbert pines after her even though she rebuffs him. Finally, she realizes her heart is back in Avonlea and that she loves Gilbert.
