Gilbert Blythe is a very intelligent, handsome, and good-natured young man who had the misfortune to start off completely on the wrong foot with Anne Shirley. Although snubbed by her though trying to make amends, he never loses his attraction for her, even after going off to college in pursuit of his dream of being a doctor. It is Gilbert that inspires Anne to write a book about her experiences in Avonlea, and she dedicates it to him and Marilla and Matthew. After Anne's pride finally melts away, she agrees to marry this man who had, consciously or unconsciously, attracted her at least in some way all along, and whose constancy she finally appreciates. After their marriage, Gilbert becomes a doctor and they have several children.
