The Wonderworks movie Anne of Green Gables stays about as true to a book as you
could ask of a movie. In my opinion, it is a great adaptation that really brings the book to
life.
Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel, however, puts together just a little bit
from each of the books Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, and Anne of Windy Poplars.
As such, it leaves out the majority of Anne's adventures. For instance, Anne never goes
to Redmond College in the movie, but her time at Redmond is primarily what the book
Anne of the Island is about. While it is relatively faithful to what material it does
include
from the books (although
it does alter the timeline and some other details; for instance, in the books Anne is
engaged to Gilbert
before she ever goes to Kingsport Ladies' College, which is really Summerside (co-ed)
High School), the movie does invent
one rather large storyline that doesn't
appear in the books at all--that of
Emmeline Harris, her father Morgan Harris, and Morgan's falling in love with Anne. I feel this
was unnecessary, given the very large amount of material in the books that was completely left
out. In other words, there was plenty of material to choose from in making the movie
without creating another storyline.
I do like the movie, as the invented parts are not bad as a separate story, and I have a strong
sentimental attachment to it since I enjoyed it
a girl, but it definitely isn't a substitute for reading the Anne sequels.
The movie Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story has nothing at all whatsoever
to do with the books and is a poor story in and of itself to boot, so it is best completely avoided.
